Crypto PSP
Crypto PSP and Card Processing for Exchanges, OTC Desks, and Web3 Merchants
A crypto PSP connects card networks to public blockchains. What fiat on ramp acquiring, travel rule and MiCA compliance, and direct stablecoin settlement actually require.
Crypto businesses occupy a peculiar position in the global payment landscape. They sit at the intersection of two financial systems that were never designed to talk to each other. On one side, the card networks built half a century ago around bank issued credit and a tightly controlled interchange model. On the other, public blockchains, instant settlement, programmable money, and a counterparty graph that does not respect national borders.
A crypto PSP is the connective tissue between those two worlds. It allows licensed exchanges, brokerage platforms, OTC desks, NFT marketplaces, and Web3 native applications to accept Visa and Mastercard payments from end users while operating settlement, treasury, and accounting flows on chain. When the model works, it is invisible. When it fails, the business effectively cannot transact.
Why Most Acquirers Refuse Crypto Merchants
Crypto remains classified by every major card scheme as one of the highest risk verticals in commerce. The reasons are well documented. Chargeback exposure is amplified by the irreversibility of crypto delivery. A buyer who receives BTC or USDT and then files a dispute leaves the merchant with no clawback option. Regulatory exposure is global. A platform legitimately licensed in Lithuania may inadvertently serve a customer in a sanctioned jurisdiction. Reputational risk is intense, with banks and acquirers facing supervisory scrutiny for any crypto exposure on their books.
The result is that traditional acquirers either decline crypto applications outright, restrict them to the smallest possible processing volumes, or impose reserve and termination terms so onerous that the merchant cannot scale. A specialized crypto PSP is designed for exactly this gap.
Fiat On Ramp Acquiring Done Properly
The most common crypto PSP use case is fiat on ramp. A retail user funds their exchange wallet by entering card details. The PSP authorizes the transaction, performs fraud and sanctions checks, settles the merchant in fiat or stablecoin, and the exchange credits the corresponding crypto balance to the user.
Done well, this flow looks like any other e commerce checkout. Done poorly, it generates 3D Secure failures, false positive fraud declines, payment routing collapses, and a chargeback ratio that pushes the merchant into Visa VAMP or Mastercard ECM monitoring within weeks. A serious crypto PSP brings dedicated routing logic, BIN level intelligence on issuer behavior toward crypto MCCs, and dispute representment workflows tailored to the sector.
Travel Rule, MiCA, and the New Compliance Baseline
Compliance has stopped being optional. The FATF travel rule requires VASPs to exchange originator and beneficiary information for transfers above defined thresholds. MiCA, the European Union framework for crypto asset markets, imposes capital, custody, governance, and conduct obligations on CASP licensed entities. The transfer of funds regulation extends information requirements to crypto on a one to one basis with traditional wires.
A crypto PSP that intends to serve regulated merchants must align its KYB, transaction monitoring, sanctions screening, and counterparty data exchange with these frameworks. Anything less exposes the merchant to enforcement action and the PSP to acquirer termination.
Direct Stablecoin Settlement and Treasury Efficiency
Crypto merchants generally prefer to receive merchant settlement in stablecoins rather than fiat. The reasons are operational. Stablecoin payouts arrive within hours rather than days. They bypass correspondent banking entirely. They allow treasury to deploy working capital across DeFi, market making, or liquidity provision without first cycling through a bank account that may freeze on receipt of crypto related inflows.
A modern crypto PSP supports settlement in USDT, USDC, and selected EUR backed stablecoins on networks such as Tron, Ethereum, Solana, and Polygon. It also provides clear on chain reporting that satisfies auditor and tax authority expectations.
The crypto businesses that will scale during the next cycle are not the ones with the loudest marketing. They are the ones with payment infrastructure that survives a stress event without losing acquirer cover. A specialized crypto PSP is the prerequisite for that resilience.
